Effective Presentations - The First Step
How familiar is this scenario? Bash you typically chink on the PowerPoint icon immediately you are tasked with preparing a presentation? If that is the lawsuit then you definitely have got common cause with most of us. And regrettably it is a large mistake. It's a error because our presentation focusing is already upon the mechanics of slides, decks, visuals, clip-art, Son and templates. Such a focusing will be needed -- but much later. For now the focusing have to be on our expected accomplishment and outcome.
Before we chink on the PowerPoint icon we should rough in a single sentence the planned accomplishment of our presentation. In today's concern linguistic communication we would recognise this as a missionary post statement. But unlike many vacuous missionary post statements the intent of this 1 is to capture the planned impact of our presentation upon our audience. That is, how make we be after for our audience to respond? We should see the followers inquiries at this stage:
- After my presentation what will the audience make that is different?
- After the presentation what will they cognize that is different?
- Once they have got got heard the presentation what will they believe that is different?
If our successful presentation have to impact our audience in a manner that simply reading its content would not accomplish then our missionary post statement have to capture these planned expectations. So, taking an illustration from a recent manufacturing presentation in the South West, our missionary post statement was:
"To guarantee that the squad understands the hour (Human Relations) impact of mill closure."
What can we state about this? It rans into the demand for a single sentence. It is succinct and to the point. It is mensurable -- we should be able to estimate the team's apprehension of the hour effects quite readily. It also sound accomplishable within the linguistic context of a single presentation. And that should not be overlooked. We can not anticipate too much from lone 1 presentation!
With the missionary post statement prepared, what is next? Well, my advice would be to park the missionary post statement for an hour. Then seek to remember it from memory. If you can make so readily then you have got got something that is fully feasible and from which we can hang the workings aims of a quality and effectual presentation. And that is the 2nd step.
